What prevents you from breaking through the Intermediate level plateau and how to do it?

"I have a feeling that in the last few years I have been stagnating in Russian."

"Just as I couldn't express myself in Russian, I still can't express myself in Russian", "I guess this is my limit".

Similar thoughts appear in the mind of a person who has hit the Intermediate plateau. Let me tell you how to get your progress back in Russian and get to the next level.

What is the plateau effect?

If you imagine your progress in Russian as a graph, at a certain point it stops going up and becomes almost horizontal, or flat for a long time. This is a plateau.

Why do you get stuck on a plateau?

Going from one level to another in any language is like an inverted pyramid. It takes much less time to go from Beginner's/Novice to Intermediate than from Intermediate to Advanced, and less time to go from Intermediate to Advanced than from Advanced to Superior.

In addition, the number of resources for self-studying Russian is different for different language levels: there are far fewer resources available for Intermediate learners than for beginners.

Indeed, strong training programs to help you move from Intermediate to Advanced level can be found in some universities and government agencies, but for those who are studying Russian on their own, there are almost no such programs on the market.

That's why, when you first started to learn Russian,

you had relatively few skills to learn
and there were a lot of free and paid resources available to you on the Internet.

The result? Your progress was noticeable.

And when you got to the Intermediate level, what happened?

You have a lot more skills to learn and they are more difficult, so there is more work to do than at the beginning level,
and the amount of resources has become much less, so it is not clear how to do this work yourself.

What do most people do in this situation?

They look for what they can find for the Intermediate level and try to do something with Russian all the time: they watch different videos on Youtube, listen to podcasts on different topics, do something with grammar, watch movies with subtitles, ask questions in groups, download some kind of charts/ worksheets, or some useful materials from different groups. It seems to them that all this should help take their Russian to the next level.

In fact, look what happens.

Imagine you need to get from point A to point B, and you don't have a map.

You can circle around point A for years, wasting a lot of time and effort and getting absolutely nowhere near point B.

If you don't have a plan and a system to go from Intermediate to Advanced - you are in that position.

Most people don't think about it. It seems to them that if they are busy with Russian all the time, that's exactly what needs to be done. Progress will come from simple exposure to the language- no matter what that exposure is.

But as the months and then years go by, they notice that their progress is minimal, almost imperceptible.

This is the plateau effect. It makes many people give up.

Why do you stay on the plateau, even though you do something with Russian all the time?

Because without a plan and a system, you go in circles around point A, rather than moving consistently toward the goal - from point A to point B.

If you listen, watch, or read something in Russian all the time on different topics, jumping from topic to topic, then,

on the one hand, you are listening to something new every time, and therefore it is exciting (this is a plus, because it keeps you interested in studying Russian),
on the other hand, you cannot build up enough vocabulary on any topic to feel confident in it (this is a huge minus).

Why can't you do that?

Because in order to memorize as many words on one topic as the Russians use, you need to read/listen to quite a few texts on that topic, focusing only on that topic for a while without switching to other topics.

This is one of the most important reasons (but not the only reason!) why, although you've been working on Russian for months and years, you don't feel confident in any topic of everyday communication. And you remain on a plateau.

How do I break through the Intermediate level plateau?

To make a long story short, you have to work with the language simultaneously in several directions:

on all language skills (which is what we know how to do with the language: speaking, listening/listening, reading, and writing),
over all parts of the language (vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation),
on learning the country and culture (socio-cultural competence)

You should focus on what is required for the Advanced level.

All of these areas are important, but if you have to choose, it's best to focus on five:

Listening/Listening comprehension
Speaking
Vocabulary
Grammar
Pronunciation.

Что вам мешает пробить плато уровня Intermediate и как это сделать?

«У меня такое ощущение, что за последние годы я в русском стою на месте «Как не мог говорить, так и не говорю», «Наверное, это мой потолок». Примерно такие мысли появляются у человека, попавшего в Intermediate плато. Рассказываем, как вернуть прогресс в русском и перейти на новый уровень.

Что такое эффект плато?

Если представить прогресс в русском в виде графика, то в определённый момент он перестанет идти вверх и станет на долгое время практически горизонтальным, ровным. Это плато.

Почему вы застреваете на плато?

Переход с уровня на уровень в любом языке напоминает перевернутую пирамиду. Перейти с Beginner’s/Novice на Intermediate займёт гораздо меньше времени, чем с Intermediate на Advanced, а с Intermediate на Advanced - меньше, чем с Advanced на Superior.

Кроме этого, количество ресурсов для изучающих русский самостоятельно для разных уровней языка разное: для Intermediate доступных ресурсов гораздо меньше, чем для начинающих.

Да, сильные учебные программы, которые помогут перейти с уровня Intermediate на Advanced, встречаются в некоторых университетах и государственных структурах, но для тех, кто учит русский самостоятельно, таких программ на рынке практически нет.

Поэтому, когда вы начинали учить русский,

навыков вам надо было освоить относительно немного
и в интернете для вас было доступно много платных и бесплатных ресурсов.

Результат? Ваш прогресс был заметен.

А когда вы дошли до уровня Intermediate, что произошло?

навыков вам стало нужно освоить гораздо больше и они сложнее, поэтому работы для этого нужно сделать больше, чем на начальном уровне,
а количество ресурсов стало гораздо меньше, поэтому непонятно, как эту работу делать самому.

Большинство людей что делает в такой ситуации?

Ищет то, что можно найти для Intermediate, и старается постоянно что-то делать по-русски: они смотрят разные видео в Youtube, слушают подкасты по разным темам, что-то делают с грамматикой, фильмы смотрят с субтитрами, в группах задают вопросы, скачивают себе какие-то таблички, полезные материалы из разных групп. Им кажется, что всё это должно помочь вывести их русский на следующий уровень.

На самом деле, смотрите, что происходит.

Представьте, что вам нужно попасть из точки А в точку Б, а у вас нет карты.

Вы можете годами ходить вокруг точки А, тратить массу времени и усилий и совершенно не приближаться к точке Б.

Если у вас нет плана и системы, как перейти с уровня Intermediate на уровень Advanced - вы именно в таком положении.

Большинство людей об этом не задумывается. Им кажется, что если они все время заняты русским, то это именно то, что надо делать. Прогресс возникнет от от простого контакта с языком - не важно, в чём именно заключается этот контакт.

Но проходят месяцы, а потом и годы, и они замечают, что прогресс-то у них минимальный, почти незаметный.

Возникает тот самый эффект плато. От этого у многих опускаются руки.

Почему вы остаетесь на плато, несмотря на то, что вы все время что-то делаете с русским?

Потому что без плана и системы вы ходите кругами вокруг точки А, а не последовательно движетесь к цели - от точки А к точке Б.

Если вы слушаете, смотрите или читаете всё время что-то на русском по разным темам, прыгая с темы на тему, то,

с одной стороны, вы каждый раз слышите что-то новое, и поэтому вам интересно (это плюс, т.к. это поддерживает ваше желание заниматься русским),
с другой стороны, ни по одной теме вы не можете наработать достаточно словаря, чтобы чувствовать себя в ней уверенно (это огромный минус).

Почему не можете?

Потому что для того, чтобы запомнить столько слов по одной теме, сколько используют русские, вам нужно прочитать/ прослушать довольно много текстов по этой теме, фокусируясь какое-то время только ней, не переключаясь на другие темы.

Это одна из важных причин (но не единственная!), почему, хотя вы работаете над русским месяцами и годами, ни в одной теме повседневного общения вы не чувствуете себя уверенно. И остаетесь на плато.

Как всё же пробить плато уровня Intermediate?

Если говорить коротко, то работать с языком надо одновременно в нескольких направлениях:

над всеми языковыми навыками (а это то, что мы умеем делать на языке: говорение, слушание/ аудирование, чтение и письмо),
над всеми частями языка (словарь, грамматику, произношение),
над узнаванием страны и культуры (социокультурную компетенцию)

нужно сфокусировать на том, что требуется для уровня Advanced.

Все эти направления важны, но, если выбирать, то сфокусироваться лучше на пяти:

Понимание на слух/ аудирование
Говорение
Словарь
Грамматика
Произношение.
