“ЕЩЁ”- small word, many meanings

At the Intermediate level, ещё stops meaning just “still” and becomes a multi-function connector that Russians use constantly in their everyday speech. Mastering it is a big fluency upgrade.

1️⃣ STILL

Used when an action or state continues.

• Он ещё спит. — He’s still sleeping.
• Она ещё дома. — She’s still at home.
• Мы ещё работаем. — We’re still working.

📝 Antonym for УЖЕ (already, stress on E).

📝 Often used in combination with ВСЁ as ВСЁ ЕЩЁ: Он всё ещё спит. Она всё ещё дома. Мы всё ещё работаем.

2️⃣ MORE (=another)

Used 1) to ask for another portion of the same food, 2) to tell/ask about continuing the current action .

• Ещё хлеба, пожалуйста. — More bread, please.
• Ещё одну такую же чашку кофе. — Another cup of coffee.
• Хотите ещё? — Do you want more? Implied to more food : Какой вкусный салат! – Хотите ещё?
• Я хочу ещё почитать. — I want to read more?
• Можно ещё поиграть? – Ну, хорошо. Поиграй ещё 10 минут. – Can I play some more? – Okay, play 10 more minutes.

📝 Common in cafés, shops, and everyday requests.

3️⃣ ALSO/ ELSE

Used to add new information to the old one.

• Ещё я хотел спросить… — Also, I wanted to ask…
• Купи хлеба. – И всё? – И ещё молока. – Buy bread. – And that’s all? – And also milk.
• Что ещё ты читаешь? — What else do you read?
• Кто ещё придёт? — Who else is coming?

4️⃣ EVEN + comparative

Strengthens comparisons. Followed by a comparative

• Это ещё лучше. — That’s even better.
• Он стал ещё умнее. — He became even smarter.
• Это ещё сложнее. — This is even more difficult.

📝 Very common with comparatives.

5️⃣ BACK (in time)

Used with states or life situations.

• Он умел это делать ещё в школе. — He’s knew how to do it back in school.
• Мы познакомились ещё в университете. — We met back at college.
• Это началось ещё десять лет назад. — It began back in Soviet times.
• Это было известно ещё в средние века . — This was already known in the Middle Ages.

At the Intermediate level, you must stop translating word-by-word and start recognizing stable speech patterns. Two of the most important ones are ЕЩЁ НЕ and ЕЩЁ БЫ.

1️⃣ ЕЩЁ НЕ – not yet

Meaning: something has not happened/ finished yet, but it is expected or possible.

Structure: + Past or Present tense

• Я ещё не сделал домашнее задание. – I haven’t done my homework yet.
• Мы ещё не начали. – We haven’t started yet.
• Она ещё не знает об этом. – She doesn’t know yet.

2️⃣ ЕЩЁ БЫ! – of course/ you bet

Meaning: a strong emotional agreement or confirmation.

Usage: 1) only in spoken Russian, 2) as a stand-alone reply, 3) as exclamation.

— Это было трудно? — Was it hard?
— Ещё бы! — You bet!

• — Ты волнуешься? — Are you nervous?
  — Ещё бы! — Of course!
  

3️⃣ Contrast: ЕЩЁ НЕ vs УЖЕ НЕ

Intermediate learners often confuse these.

• ЕЩЁ НЕ – not yet (expected to change)
  → Я ещё не хочу есть- I’m not hungry yet
• УЖЕ НЕ – no longer
  → Я уже не хочу есть. – I’m no longer hungry
