“Visiting” Verbs: One English vs Five Russian
Most Intermediate learners make the same mistake.
They always translate “to visit” as“посетить”.
So, they say:
- “В прошлом году я посетил Италию и Францию”.
- “Через месяц я поеду в Бостон посетить мою семью”.
- “Вчера я посетил друга”
And they immediately sound:
- too formal
- unnatural
- sometimes even ridiculous – like a robot writing a report.
Why? Because Russian doesn’t have just one verb for “to visit”.
It has three verbs, and their choice depends upon the type of visit.
- Is it official or private visit?
- Is a visit of a place or a person?
- Are you visiting a person within the same city or during a trip?
- Are you staying at people’s place or not during your visit?
- Are you talking about this visit in a formal or neutral style?
If you don’t separate them, you will stay stuck translating and sound off.
1. Official Visit OR Formal Talk about Private Visit of a Place
посещАть / посетИть ЧТО (Acc.)
to visit (officially)
Use this verb when talking about:
- An official visit, i,e. political visits, official trips, attending institutional events
- A personal visit or attending an event IF the style of speech is very formal (mostly written)
Examples:
- Президент посетИл Германию c дружественным визитом.
→ The president paid a friendly visit to Germany.
- Министр экономики уже дважды посещАл этот завод.
→ The Minister of Economy visited this factory already two times.
- Наша группа хотела бы посетИть музей современного искусства.
→ Our group would like to visit a museum of modern art.
This is not about experience.
This is about reporting an action.
2. Private Visit of a Place (Neutral or Informal Talk)
бывАть / побывАть ГДЕ (В/ НА + Prep.)
to visit (a place as a private person), to go (regularly to a place as a private person)
Use this verb when:
- describing your travel experience
- asking “have you ever…”
- talking about experiencing some conditions,i.e. weather, physical or emotional
This is about having been somewhere, not going there.
Examples:
- Вы когда-нибудь бывАли в Санкт-Петербурге?
→ Have you ever been to Saint Petersburg? - Она никогда не бывАла за границей.
→ She has never been abroad. - Я побывАл в Японии прошлым летом.
→ I visited Japan last summer. - Я очень хотел бы побывАть в Париже.
→ I’d really love to visit Paris. - Вы часто бывАете в этом ресторане?
→ Do you often go to this restaurant?
⚠️ Key distinction:
This is experience, not movement.
3. Private Visit of a Person
3a. Outside of Your City and NOT NECESSARY Staying at Their Place
Ездить КУДА повидАться С КЕМ
to go/ to come to visit
Examples:
- Раз в год я Езжу во Флориду повидАться с родителями.
→ Once a year I go to Florida to visit my parents. - Мы хотим поЕхать в Бостон повидАться с друзьями.
→ We’d like to go to Boston to visit our friends. - Она Ездила туда на неделю повидАться с братом.
→ She went there for a week to visit her brother. - Я специально приЕхал повидАться с тобой.
→ I came specifically to see you.
3b. Outside of Your City AND Staying at Their Place
Ездить в гОсти К КОМУ + КУДА
Examples:
- Каждое лето я Езжу в гОсти к бабушке в деревню.
→ Every summer I visit my grandmother in the countryside. - Прошлым летом году мы Ездили в гОсти к маминой сестре в Воронеж.
→ Last summer, we went to visit my mom’s sister in Voronezh. - Мы хотим съЕздить в гости к друзьям на дачу на пару дней.
→ We want to visit our friends at their country house for a couple of days.
3c. Within Your City
ходить в гОсти К КОМУ
Examples:
- Завтра я хочу сходИть в гОсти к другу.
→ I want to visit my friend tomorrow. - Мы хОдим в гОсти к бабушке каждую неделю.
→ We visit our grandmother every week. - Они пришлИ к нам в гости.
→ They came to visit us. - Она любит ходИть в гОсти.
→ She likes visiting people.

When you want to say “to visit,” ask yourself:
- Is this a visit of an official?
→ посетить - Is this about regular people? Are they visiting a place? Is the style of speech formal?
→ поcетить - Is this about regular people? Are they visiting a place? Is the style of speech not formal?
→ побывать - Is this about regular people? Are they visiting other people? Do they go outside of their own city for this visit? Are they staying at the place of other people?
→ ездить в гости - Is this about regular people? Are they visiting other people? Do they go outside of their own city for this visit? Are they not necessary staying at the place of other people?
→ ездить повидаться - Is this about regular people? Are they visiting other people? Is it a visit within the same city?
→ ходить в гости
If you don’t run this filter, you will default to translation.
