Three Different Meanings in Russian

In English the question “Which way should I go?” can refer to several different situations.
In Russian, these situations are expressed with different words and structures. Understanding the difference helps you sound much more natural.

There are three main meanings.

1. Choosing Between Two Streets or Roads

This situation happens when you are standing at a crossroads and must choose one specific street or road.

American asks: “Which way should I go?“

Russian asks about the street or road itself.

The verb changes depending on how you are moving: walking or driving.

If you are walking

• По какой улице мне идти? Which street should I go/ take?

If you are driving

• По какой улице / дороге мне ехать? Which street / road should I go/ take?

Both улица and дорога are possible for driving.

Possible answers

• Идите по этой улице. Go down this street. Take this street.
• Поезжайте по улице Пушкина. Drive down Pushkin Street. Take Pushkin Street.
• Поезжайте по этой дороге. Take this road.

2. Asking About the Route

In the second meaning, the speaker is not choosing between two immediate streets.
Instead, s/he is asking about the entire route from one place to another.

Examples:

• New York → Washington
• The theater → home
• Village A → Village B

Here Russian may use three nouns: дорога — путь — маршрут. However, they are not identical.

ДОРОГА

We use дорОга for a practical, everyday route.

• По какой дорОге мне идти?

ПУТЬ

A more formal or neutral word for “path” or “way.” it is masculine gender word.

• По какому путИ мне идти?

МАРШРУТ

Used for a planned or complex route.

Typical situations:

• hiking
• tourism
• long driving trips
• organized travel

• По какому маршрУту мне идти?

Example answers

• Идите через парк — так будет короче. Go through the park — it will be shorter.
• Не ходите через парк. Идите по улице — так безопаснее. Don’t go through the park. Walk down the street — it’s safer.

Tourist example

• По какому маршруту лучше ехать?

Then the answer usually includes step-by-step directions:

• Сначала езжайте туда, потом поверните направо…

3. Asking About Direction

The third meaning refers not to a road and not to a route, but to direction.

Situation:

You are on a street looking for the metro. You know the station is somewhere on this street. But you don’t know which direction to walk.

In Russian, we are using the words сторонА (side, direction) or направлЕние (direction – formal):

• В какую стОрону мне идти к метро? Which direction should I go to reach the metro?

Or more formal:

• В каком направлЕнии мне идти?

Possible answers

• Идите туда. (gesture)
• Идите прямо. Go straight.
• Идите направо. Go right.

“That Way Is Quicker”

This phrase corresponds to meaning №2 (route).

Therefore Russian can use:

• дорога
• путь
• маршрут

Examples:

• Эта дорОга корОче. This route/ way is shorter.
• Этот путь короче. This route/ way is shorter.
• Этот маршрУт короче. This route/ way is shorter.

Idiom: “My Way or the Highway”

This English idiom does not use words like дорога, путь, маршрут in Russian.

Instead, Russian expresses the idea of imposing one’s will.

Two common translations:

• чтобы было по-чьему
• чтобы было или по-чьему, или никак

Examples

• Он любит, чтобы всё всегда было по его. He likes everything to be done his way.
• Вы хотите, чтобы было или по-вашему, или никак? Do you want it to be your way or highway?
